Isle of Man

The Isle of Man, the autonomous Crown dependency of UK is located in the Irish Sea in the British Isles. The island is not an integral part of United Kingdom. The defence, and foreign affairs are controlled by the government of United Kingdom. Douglas is the capital of the island.


HISTORY:- Isle of Man was first inhabited in the Middle Stone Age by the natural shelters. The Vikings arrived in the land around 800. They had settled the Tynwald, the parliament of the island. After the Battle of Skyhill, Kingdom of Mann and the Isles was set up by the Vikings in 1079. With the treaty of Perth, the Norwegian king Magnus VI ceded the island to Scotland. The British arrived in the island in the 14th century. The island came under British reign in 1341. In 1765, British crown recognized sovereignty over the island after a prolonged period of feudal rule. The island was gained the status of a crown dependency without being incorporated into the British territory.

 

GEOGRAPHY:- Isle of Man is situated at 54 15 N, 4 30 W in Western Europe between Great Britain and Ireland in the Irish Sea. Apart from the main Island Isle of Man, other islands like Calf of Man, Chicken Rock and St. Patrick's Isle are also included in the territory of Isle of Man. The total area of the island is 572 sq km. The coastline is 160 km long bordering the Irish Sea. Isle of Man is formed of hills in the north and central valley which bisects the southern region. The lowest point is Irish Sea (0 m) and the highest point is Snaefell (621 m).

 

CLIMATE:- The climate of Isle of Man is temperate with cool summers and mild winters. One-third of the year remains overcast.

 

GOVERNMENT:- Isle of Man is a British crown dependency which has parliamentary democracy. The constitution of the island is unwritten. The legal system is based on the United Kingdom law. The three major departments of the government are:

Executive branch comprises the Lord of Mann Queen ELIZABETH II (chief of state), Lieutenant Governor, the Chief Minister (head of government), and the cabinet. The Queen is represented by the Lieutenant Governor.

Legislative branch comprises the bicameral Tynwald which consists of the Legislative Council (11 seats) and the House of Keys (24 seats).

Judicial branch comprises the High Court of Justice.

ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS:- There are no administrative divisions in the island.

 

CULTURE:- Norse and Celtic cultures are prominent in the culture of Isle of Man. The national dish of the island is ‘Spuds and Herrin’.

 

ECONOMY:- Offshore banking, manufacturing, and tourism are the main industries of the island.

CITIES:- The capital of the island Douglas is the largest city.
